BESEN FAMILY ARTIST PLACEMENT 2018 – DRAMATURGY
BLISS, with Tom Wright
with Malthouse Theatre
The Besen Family Artist Program (BFAP) is offered as professional development for early to mid-career artists who seek experience in observing specific productions or ongoing artistic work within a mainstage theatre company. Now in its 13th year, this program has cultivated a new generation of ambitious theatre-makers through mentorships with a company artist.
The BFAP afforded me the opportunity to observe the rehearsal process across six weeks, from the first day of design presentations, table read and dramaturgical script discussions, to early blocking, first run-throughs, refining, reshaping, and defining scenes, and putting it all together in the theatre during the tech and previews period. Working alongside Tom Wright and Matt Lutton gave me the opportunity to observe the creation of a new Australian theatrical work of scale, as well as giving me the skills and rigour to use in my own work in developing and creating new works for the stage.
